How it inspires you: The reason this song inspires me is because it brings me back to a time in my life where I really looked up to my father growing up. I'd look to him and see what I wanted to be later on in life. I'd hear him sing and play and I'd want to be able to do the same one day. Despite not being able to speak Arabic at the time, I knew all of the lyrics to this song in Arabic and it further inspired me to start learning the language more seriously during my high school career. Understanding what the words meant (albeit poetic and cryptic) and having heard this song so often, I listen to it and immediately get reminded of a better time in my life. The lyrics themselves do not inspire me (as they are about a story of horseman and love), however the melody itself and the timing does.
How I discovered it: This piece of music is a song that I heard a lot growing up. My father sings and plays keyboard and this was a piece he often played while performing at weddings and different parties. As my dad plays a lot of different Arabic music, this song stuck out to me. I thought the melody sounded beautiful despite it being a classical song of which I typically do not like.
Why you need it: Music such as this has always been something that brings my family and everybody within the subculture of my extended family together. We are a family of musicians. Everybody has some sort of instrument they play and my uncles all grew up with music in their lives. I like to look at this song as a symbol of all of that. It represents all of the different songs that have brought the people I've been around together. Rather than say I need this specific song in my life, I feel that it is more fair to say that I need music in general in my life.
Where it is featured in your life: I have this song on my computer and in my phone at the moment. I put it in a playlist strictly containing Arabic music as this playlist consists of other pieces that take me back to growing up. I like to listen to this when I am either feeling very happy and want to bring up my mood or when I am feeling down and need something to pick me back up. However, the best time I see this piece in my life is when my dad performs it when we have guests or when I simply hear him practicing his music.
